What is the differences in sheets like egyptian, pima, sateen and thread count?

I am looking for a nice soft/smooth feeling sheet set that after its wash doesn’t get little knobbies on them. I don’t like silk, but something soft. Also, I know the higher the thread count, the nicer the sheets but does it have to be so expensive the high high count thread like 800+.
